Wealth can be a blessing if we do good with it or a curse if we don’t.

Wealth can be a blessing if we do good with it or a curse if we don't.

Welcome back to my story.

During my days on earth, human suffering and dire poverty were caused, as they are today, by the greed and selfishness of those rich people who have no love of the poor or their neighbors and lack empathy and compassion and are devoid of moral values.

They have rejected me and my invitation to share and build a new community in society among people, where sharing national and personal wealth can bring social justice, equality, and a life of dignity to the poor. A society that has chosen good, just leaders that would share and bring happiness and social justice to the people is what I want to see. There are only a few nations in the world today that have achieved that high standard of social integration, social equality, and virtue.

I told the story of the super rich man Dives that lived in a mansion and whose dining table was loaded with food and drink, and he would not share even the crumbs that fell from his table with the poor. There was a suffering, dying man named Lazarus lying outside the gate of his palatial home. Malnutrition and infection had covered Lazarus in sores. Only the neighborhood dogs had pity and compassion on him, and they licked his sores to try and heal him. No human came to help him. He found himself abandoned, unloved, avoided, and completely alone. My friend Luke wrote the story in Ch. 16:19-31.

The day came when Lazarus died, and he, being an innocent person, a victim of human greed and selfishness, was taken to heaven by Angels to dwell in paradise beside Abraham. Dives died, and he was sentenced to suffer privation and torment in hell. He saw Lazarus with Abraham far off in paradise and begged that Lazarus be allowed to ease his suffering and warn his five brothers. Dives was the leader of a proud, greedy family dynasty, and all the family were super rich. Abraham refused his request, saying that Dives had it all when he was alive, and he had refused Lazarus even a crust of bread.

Even if a ghost warned them, his brothers would not change unless they learned from Moses and the prophets. That’s my story, and the message is clear. There is great injustice and social inequality in the world. When some people become rich, it should be a blessing and opportunity to share and bring social justice to the poor.

It is the lure of wealth that is like a virus that corrupts and brings greed, selfishness, and misery—not happiness— to the selfish rich in this world or the next. They become corrupt, lack compassion, and show no love for their neighbors. They develop a hardened heart. The worst of all is that they become blind to the truth about themselves and will not listen to advice. My words and example mean nothing to them. They cannot and will not repent, change, and find salvation. Wealth can be a blessing if we do good with it or a curse if we don’t.

Lazarus symbolizes the poor in this world and the great injustice and hunger that they suffer. The rich cannot be truly happy unless they repent, find compassion and love for their neighbors, and work for social justice by sharing and ending poverty and suffering. Share what you have, little or big, with those who have less.

Come again, and let’s share, Jesus.

Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus in the Bible was a man whose life-changing encounter with Jesus was recorded by Luke (Luke 19:1–10). Zacchaeus was one of the head tax collectors in the region of Jericho, and the Bible says he was a rich man. Jewish tax collectors like Zacchaeus were scorned by their countrymen for a couple of reasons: one, they were known for cheating the taxpayers; and, two, they worked for Rome. The other Jews saw Jewish tax collectors as collaborators with the enemy—traitors to their own people.
