KUALA LUMPUR — A 62-year-old grandmother claimed trial at a Sessions Court to abusing a six-year-old child last year.

V. Tanawali was accused of using a cane to hit the child on the face, body, hands and legs at a house in Taman Puchong Perdana, Jalan Mawar 1, Bukit Puchong at 11am in September last year.

Tanawali was arrested on June 5 after a video clip showing an elderly woman beating a child went viral.

She pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to her in Tamil.

The charge under Section 31(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001 carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or maximum 20-year imprisonment or both.

Sessions Court judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar fixed bail at RM10,000 in one surety.
