An Alamance County sheriff’s deputy and a former Elon University campus police officer have been arrested and charged with felony child abuse.
The District Attorney’s Office asked the State Bureau of Investigation to assist in a physical child abuse and neglect case May 24, according to a statement by Scott Williams with the SBI. The county Department of Social Services initiated the case to investigate the alleged abuse of a 3-year-old boy by Christopher Wilburn, 27, his biological father, and Erin Rumley, 34, his step-mother.
Wilburn was a deputy and Rumley was an officer with the Elon University Campus Police Department.
The child’s daycare center had contacted the boy’s biological mother, advising her that Wilburn had dropped him off at the daycare with multiple physical injuries, the SBI reported Tuesday. The child has special needs and was unable to communicate.
On Monday, Oct. 16, SBI agents arrested Wilburn and Rumley without incident and charged them with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Both were booked in the Alamance County jail with a $5,000 bond.
