D.R.C.: Rebels Agree To Demobilise Child Soldiers [news]

UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy said yesterday from Uganda that rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have given her agency assurances they will stop recruiting and begin demobilising child soldiers.

Bellamy said that in addition to a demobilisation program already in place with the D.R.C. government, the new pledge shows that “the rebel forces too, want to work with us in the program to integrate these children back to their normal life.” According to Bellamy, however, UNICEF will not be able to handle the demobilisation effort alone.
