SUBIC BAY Freeport: Three (3) energy companies signed a memorandum of agreement to put up a US$ 1.28 billion 600-megawatt (MW) coal power plant in Subic, Friday.
Meralco, Aboitiz Power and Taiwan Cogen signed a memorandum of agreement which will pave the way for the start of the construction of a coal plant in Redondo inside Subic Bay Freeport zone.
Erramon Aboitiz said that the project is part of the whole objective not only to bring in competitive priced power but to do so with least possible adverse effect on our environment.
He adde that the project would become the source of competitive priced baseload power not only for Subic Bay Freeport but also for the entire Luzon grid as well.
The consortium according to Aboitiz has specifically chosen to use Circulating Fluidized Bed Boilers that remove sulfur oxide and control the burning temperature of coal to prevent formation of nitrous oxides which lower air emissions.
First phase of the project will be finished in 2014 while the second and final phase will be finished in 2016.
