Child pornography addict caught with horrific videos and images gets suspended sentence

A strong reaction from commentators criticizing the lenient 18 month suspended sentence given to a man in Ireland who downloaded the most serious kind of child sexual abuse images and videos. The man found guilty of a serious crime against children is Stephen Purvis (47) from The Green, Tir Cluain, Midleton, Co Cork. He pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court having been arrested by Garda for having vile child pornography on his computer in May 2013, The case has only now come to judgment. Judge Brian O’Callaghan declared that the crime was of the most serious concerning videos and images of children being sexually abused. “This is not a victimless crime”, “. The Judge said, It is a victim crime and the victims are not just society – there are young children abused to produce these vile images and subjected to degrading torture, for that is what this is,” he said. “If no one consumed these images, they would not be produced and therefore would not be available – young children are used for vile behavior – this is not just an offense committed on a laptop,” he added.
Despite the horrific images and videos ,possession of which a serious criminal offense and despite the seriousness of the crime Judge Brian O’Callaghan said that the sentence of 18 months suspended was appropriate. Many child rights defenders disagree and claim that he should have been give a long jail term. But Purvis walked free.
