A Catholic bishop is calling for prayers after a Filipino national was executed for murder in Saudi Arabia.

Bishop Ruperto Santos of the migrants’ pastoral office at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, expressed sorrow over the execution of the unnamed overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

“We are deeply saddened by the execution,” said Santos, who is also the bishop of Antipolo. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The bishop urged the public to show support for the family.

“We urge everyone to come together in support and solidarity for the family, showing them the strength of our community during these trying times,” he said.

The OFW had been on death row since 2022, convicted of killing a Saudi national in 2020.

The execution was carried out despite efforts by the Philippines to stop the death penalty, including a presidential appeal.
