3rd QUARTER MONITORING VISIT TO DAVAO/MINDANAO FARMERS

For the 3rd quarter of 2015, Mr. Donard Angeles- PREDA Pro Fair Trade Producer’s Development Officer conducted monitoring visit to Davao mango growers last September 22-25, 2015. On the 23rd of September Martin Moritz of El Puente joined the visit. Among the activities conducted are the following:

a. ORIENTATION ON WFTO and FAIR TRADE PRINCIPLES – The farmers gained knowledge about World Fair Trade Organization and the 10 Fair Trade Principles. Martin Moritz of El Puente shared about the partnership of Northern buyers and Southern Producers. He explained how Fair Trade principles works in WFTO. Martin Moritz of El Puente gave orientation to United Women Farmer’s Association & Banas ! Women’s Association about their organization then discussed the partnership of Northern buyers like El Puente and PREDA as Southern Producers.

Picture3b.Mango Management- Flower Induction should be on proper timing so that harvesting will not fall on the period of May 1-June 15, 2015 which is the mango season for Luzon and the price of mango is low. Farmers is reminded of the putting of PREDA Fair Trade label on the carton or crates since this is a mechanism for traceability.They were encourage to take pictures as additional proof of harvest.

c.awarding of Fair Trade Premium – a total of 17 mango farmers coming from 3 communities received a total of Php 238,050.00. This was their bonus on the mango delivered for the period of March 7-May 23, 2015.

d. Visit to Profood Davao Plant – Upon arrival to the plant, Martin Moritz of El Puente
Picture4 introduced himself, his organization and the purpose of the visit. Ms. Jean Uy-Young and Garry Malanag gave orientation about the partnership and mango processing. Afterwards, Martin Moritz of El Puente visited and observed the processing plant as per the flow of the dried mango processing facilitated by Gary Malanag-the Quality Control Supervisor.

e.Checking of mango deliveries for the period May 24-September 24, 2015 was done. (attached summary of mango deliveries.)
